Has Online Dating reached epidemic proportion?
A recent headline I ran across, of a girls dating profile read “Hot girls searching for boys food” At first, being naive as I am, I had no clue what this meant. Have dating profiles become a place where members must sell themselves in such a way as to depict a sales copy sheet in order to stand out in the crowd?
I think it has become an epidemic, a search for Artificial Relationships. I know you have heard of A.I. this is A.R. Everyday more and more dating sites are being launched.
Is it truly a quest to create real and wholesome relationships between two hearts? Or simply vehicle to capitalize on yet another human weakness such as fear of rejection, lack of time or things of this nature? Let’s be real, “lack of time”, if you have no time for traditional courtship, how can you possibly have time to devote to the relationship and give the needed attention it requires to begin growing and blossoming? Today we have dating sites that match our compatibility by taking love tests and by filling out forms their powerful systems will spit out our perfect match dream girl or boy. It doesn’t stop there, no matter if you are looking for a relationship for boy / girl, boy / boy, girl / girl. Asian, Russian, Chinese, Latino, Pinay (Filipino), Indian, American, Gay, lesbian this list seems to never end. I actually ran across a site the other day while researching material, which actually offered to match up for hunting, fishing and any other outdoor activity which I thought, was a great idea.
I personally think it has become an addiction rather than a solution. Did you know In the U.S. alone, tens of millions of people are trying to find dates or spouses online every day? How accurate are the profiles they find is it really a girl you are talking to? And just how successful is online dating compared with old fashioned conventional dating? These and other questions have recently stimulated a small explosion of studies by social scientists. The research revealed many surprising things about the hot world of online dating, dating services and speed dating. Some of the findings could be of great value to the millions who now look to the Internet to find love.
Several dating services are promoting themselves as built around powerful matchmaking test like eharmony.com, perfectmatch.com and more. Did you know that not one of these sites tests have ever been offered to outside scientific verification? In 2005, using eHarmony’s own published statistics, a team of highly credible authorities concluded in an online whitepaper: “When these types of compatibility tests recommend someone as a compatibly match, there is a less than 1 and 500 chance that you will marry that person.” This team also concluded and made keen observation that “there is no evidence to support that scientific psychology is able to match up individuals who will enjoy happy and lasting marriages.
Leaving those types of sales pitches behind, we find other dating sites that tend to target more refined niches like Asian dating such as Thainigirls.com, aperfectwife.com and more. These types of sites cater to smaller niche markets, offering up love and the chance to meet beautiful Asian women. I suppose these fill certain needs for both the men and the women that use them. They make no claims of offering the perfect match through tests, or compatibility charts, only that these lovely ladies, most in their early twenties, really would love and care for a man in his late 50’s or 60’s and it would be true love from her heart of hearts even though she met you just days ago. Sometimes opposites do attract and sometimes can send each other spinning away out of control too. I find it hard to believe that a 20 year old Asian woman would find much in common with a man in his late 50’s. I know when I was 19 and 20 I never recall a moment when I thought to myself “Wow, that 60 year old lady is Hot.”
How can any site possibly predict how two people will feel when they meet in person and spend time together and chemistry comes into play? Research has shown numerous times undeniably that physical appearance is important to both men and women.
Online dating does take care of the safety concerns that prevent many people from meeting in person So that is a plus.
Discounting my personal views of the many issues, the future of online dating and marriage looks bright. Online dating is rapidly growing and the competition between sites will force many changes in the types of services they provide. Here in 2008 revenue is expected to top $600 million. Perhaps an old geezer like me can start a new dating site using nursing home love as a theme.
Call me a bit old fashioned, but I like the feel of a soft warm hand and the sound of my date’s heartbeat not the clicks of a mouse and keyboard and heat from the processor.

Well written and researched. I wonder if the guy who wrote this lives in Thailand? I find that Thai girls actually prefer to get to know you a bit more before they go on a date, which usually will include one of her close friends... that throws a different perspective on the above theory...
